Radiation safety
The Meharry Medical College Radiation Safety Program is administered by the EHS Department’s radiation safety officer (RSO) to ensure the safe, legal and responsible use of all sources of ionizing radiation. Our primary objective is to maintain all radiation exposures at as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) for personnel, patients, students and the public.
This comprehensive program covers two main areas:
- Radiation-producing equipment. We oversee the safety protocols for all X-ray machines and other radiation-generating devices used throughout the college, including clinical areas, diagnostic imaging facilities, and the School of Dentistry. This involves equipment registration, quality assurance testing, shielding design, and ensuring that operational procedures comply with state regulations.
- Radioactive Materials. The Radiation Safety Program governs the authorization, procurement, security, use, and disposal of all radioisotopes and sealed radioactive sources utilized primarily within our research laboratories. This includes monitoring personnel exposure, conducting regular surveys and wipe tests to check for contamination, and managing waste according to strict regulatory protocols.
All individuals who work with or near these sources are required to complete specialized radiation safety training, adhere to established standard operating procedures (SOPs), and use appropriate protective measures (time, distance, and shielding) to minimize potential exposure. The radiation safety officer (RSO) has the authority to investigate potential hazards and suspend any activities that pose a threat to health or property.
