Biosafety
The EHS Department manages a comprehensive biosafety program to protect personnel, the environment, and the community from exposure to infectious agents and hazardous biological materials. The program applies strict containment procedures, risk assessments, and adherence to specific controls for work with microorganisms, human cell lines, and recombinant DNA. A critical component is the Meharry Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan, which mandates the use of universal precautions, a method of infection control that treats all blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) as if known to be infectious, to prevent the transmission of pathogens like Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Through required training, engineering controls, and post-exposure protocols, EHS minimizes occupational risk and ensures compliance with regulatory standards.
Bloodborne pathogen training
All Meharry personnel that have potential exposures to Bloodborne pathogens are required to take annual Bloodborne Pathogen training. The required training module can be accessed through Workday learning.
