Division of Finance

The Division of Finance serves as a strategic cornerstone of Meharry Medical College, ensuring the responsible stewardship, integrity and sustainability of the institution’s financial resources. Under the leadership of Cynthia E. Clemons, MHA, senior vice president and chief financial officer, the Division partners across all areas of the College to support informed decision-making, operational excellence and long-term institutional growth.

Composed of key functional areas—including the Office of the Controller, Financial Planning, Budgeting and Operations, Treasury Management, Research Finance and Compliance, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Campus Support Services, and Human Resources—the division plays a vital role in ensuring resources are strategically allocated, transparently managed, and accurately reported. Beyond financial operations, the division oversees essential campus services such as housing, postal operations and printing, reinforcing its commitment to the college’s academic and administrative missions.

We are committed to: 

  • Supporting students through access to financial aid, scholarships and financial literacy resources that promote academic success and reduce debt burden. 
  • Empowering departments and schools with accurate budgeting, reporting and financial planning tools to make informed decisions.

Advancing the Mission Through Finance

The Division of Finance encompasses several key departments, each vital to Meharry Medical College’s financial ecosystem. Together, these units form a unified team dedicated to strengthening Meharry’s financial foundation, advancing institutional priorities, and fostering a culture of ethical stewardshipoperational excellence, and continuous improvement.

Office of the Controller

The Office of the Controller oversees the financial integrity of Meharry Medical College by managing all accounting operations, financial reporting and compliance functions. The office ensures that institutional resources are used responsibly and in accordance with federal, state and institutional policies. 
Reporting offices are
Accounts Payable, Payroll, Treasury Management, Corporate Card Accounting, Purchasing, and General Accounting and Endowment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Financial accounting and reporting functions, including payroll, procurement, accounts payable, property management and grants and contracts. 
  • Compliance regarding College, state and federal requirements, guidelines and laws.  

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Financial Aid and Scholarship Management administers student financial support programs with equity and compassion, ensuring access and affordability for Meharry’s diverse student body. 

  • Assists with reducing financial burden for all students and families to have educational accessibility and affordability through federal, grants, external, third-party servicers and scholarship funding programs. 
  • Processes funding programs to help cover the cost of attendance (COA) for educational expenses, including tuition, fees, books, and living expenses that are subject to change year to year. 
  • Provides one-on-one financial coaching, budgeting tools, and debt management workshops to students and families to bring awareness to long-term indebtedness and to become a conscious borrower.  

Financial Planning, Budgeting and Operations

Financial Planning, Budgeting and Operationsprovides strategic leadership in the development, coordination, forecasting, financial planning, management and performance analytics of Meharry Medical College’s financial resources.

Research, Finance and Compliance

Research, Finance and Compliance ensures financial accountability and regulatory compliance for research grants and sponsored programs, supporting Meharry’s research enterprise from pre-award to post-award stages. 

Human Resources

Meharry’s Office of Human Resources is committed to attracting, rewarding, developing and retaining a diverse and talented workforce. 

Campus Support Services

Campus Support Services provides essential operational functions that ensure the daily efficiency and convenience of campus life for students, faculty and staff. These services support Meharry Medical College’s mission by maintaining reliable infrastructure and responsive service delivery across several key areas.
