F-1 English Language Policy
F-1 international student applicants who apply for academic admission to Meharry Medical College’s School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Graduate Studies, School of Applied Computational Sciences, and School of Global Health are expected to take all of their courses alongside native English speakers. This includes:
- Participating in class discussions
- Reading and understanding assigned textbook and course material
- Comprehending lectures
- Performing writing & typing for essays, and exams
About F-1 International Students
F-1 international student applicants are considered F-1 international student applicants if they do not possess U.S. citizenship, do not have Lawful Permanent Resident status, do not have asylee status, do not have refugee status, do not have DACA status, do not possess a Work Authorization EAD document, or do not possess non-immigrant status allowing them to attend a U.S. institution of higher education.
Test Exemptions
The School of Medicine and School of Dentistry only exempts citizens of Canada, The Bahamas, and Jamaica from taking the English language proficiency test. Citizens of Australia, The Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, South Africa, or United Kingdom may be exempt from taking the English language proficiency test.
F-1 students have unique testing requirements. Please scroll towards the bottom of the page for guidance tailored to F-1 students.
Please note, English language proficiency tests are only valid for two years after the test date and that results must be shared directly with Meharry Medical College. Modes of sharing scores vary by the test.
English Language Proficiency
In addition to the general requirements for admission, English proficiency, both written and oral, must be determined as part of the Meharry Medical College admission process. This may be done by one of the following English language proficiency tests.
Duolingo English Test
Required English Proficiency Score:
135 and above
Search for “Meharry Medical College” and select the appropriate program.
TOEFL iBT (Online)
Required English Proficiency Score:
100 and above with each section scores of at minimum 25
To have your scores sent to Meharry, enter code 1458: Meharry Medical College.
IELTS
Required English Proficiency Score:
7.5 or above with no part less than 7.0

Required English Proficiency Score:
ECFMG applicants must attain a minimum score of 350 on each of the four measured sub-tests of OET Medicine (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) in one test administration.
For Graduate Medical Education applicants invited to interview, submit English language proficiency scores to the program coordinator at Meharry Medical College.
