This summer, the Meharry School of Applied Computational Sciences, in partnership with Fisk University, hosted the 2026 MS-CC Undergraduate Summer Research Internship. The program introduced 15 undergraduate students from across the U.S. to research applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced computational techniques.
“The internship is a great opportunity for students to dive into research and apply computational solutions to solve problems in medical diagnostics, patient care, human-computer interaction and cybersecurity,” said Pushpita Chatterjee, Ph.D., principal investigator and assistant professor of computer science and data science.
Through hands-on projects and faculty mentorship from both Meharry and Fisk, interns gained invaluable experience with:
- Building an AI chatbot
- Analyzing AI-driven human motion
- Processing SQL, bioinformatics and fMRI data analysis
- Mapping GIS cyber threats
- Communicating complex science through graphic design
These newly developed skills were on display during the Undergraduate Summer Research Internship Symposium. The daylong event was a celebration of the remarkable achievements of each scholar and the power of collaborative research.
Students provided oral presentations of their research projects and discussed their work more informally during the poster session.
“The enthusiasm and pride of each intern was amazing during the symposium,” said Dr. Chatterjee. “They all worked so hard on their projects and will return to their colleges with valuable computational and research skills.”
About the Program
The MS-CC Undergraduate Summer Research Internship has been held in the summers of 2025 and 2026. The program is funded through a supplement to the National Science Foundation Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Award No. 2234326, “21st Century Research-Cyberinfrastructure for MSIs through MS-CC: A phased approach to engage the Missing Millions.”
