Getting a Social Security Number
If you are authorized to work in the U.S. by Meharry Medical College, you may apply for a Social Security Number (SSN). This number is required for employment and tax purposes.
Who Needs to Apply?
You’ll need an SSN if you are:
- An F-1 international student with on-campus work authorization
- A J-1 research scholar with Meharry-approved employment
- An H-1B employee (e.g., faculty, researcher, or staff)
What do I need to do before I apply?
- F-1 Students:
Contact the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) to confirm work eligibility and request a Student Employment Verification Letter.
→ Wait at least 48 hours after receiving your “Continued Attendance” I-20 before applying for your SSN.
- J-1 Scholars:
Confirm work eligibility with the Responsible Officer (RO) and obtain a verification letter if required.
- H-1B Employees:
Work authorization is granted through your Form I-797 Approval Notice. You do not need a letter from a school official, but bring your employment documentation.
What documents will I need to apply?
For all applicants:
- Valid passport (with certified translation if not in English)
- Printed I-94 arrival record
- Student / Employment Verification Letter
- Social Security Application Form
For F-1 students:
- Form I-20
- Authorization from PDSO
For J-1 scholars:
- DS-2019
For H-1B:
- Form I-797 Approval Notice
- Employment Offer Letter (if available)
As an international student, if you want to work on campus, you must contact the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO). It is recommended that you wait 48 hours after receiving your “Continued Attendance” I-20 before you apply for an SSN.
