Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Department

Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

We’re excited to welcome you to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences—where purpose meets passion in addressing the mental health needs of residents living in Nashville, throughout Middle Tennessee and across the country.

Rooted in a legacy that began with the founding of the Meharry Community Mental Health Center in 1971—and renamed in honor of Dr. Lloyd C. Elam in 1991—our department is committed to delivering compassionate care, innovative education, and transformative research. At the heart of our mission is a deep respect for the individual, and a belief that empathy and understanding are essential to exceptional care.

Our academic department offers clinical training, a supportive and structured learning environment, and a renowned residency program that emphasizes comprehensive psychiatric education and the humane treatment of all patients.

If you’re passionate about making a meaningful impact in mental health and committed to addressing health disparities, we invite you to join us on this journey.
