Futures in Health Science Summer Internship
Our Futures in Health Sciences Summer Internship for High School Students is an extension of Meharry’s long-standing internship program in Nashville. Our Memphis-based edition is designed to expose high school students from underrepresented communities to careers in this field. We anticipate that this exposure will allow our interns to imagine themselves in these roles and fuel their pursuit of a career in the health science arena.
The program allows them to have an expanded view of career possibilities by providing activities ranging from shadowing healthcare providers and ancillary service professionals to workshops with our data science experts. The internship also helps to familiarize our interns with the concept that there is a team approach in healthcare and that every person on the team helps to make our population whole.
Intern Testimonials
“The clinicals (shadowing) at the Meharry clinic showed me a healthcare environment that I would love to work in. I had the opportunity to meet patients and learn skills that would help me in my future career.”
“I think it broadened my career interest particularly for lab and pediatric (occupational) therapy. When shadowing both of those careers, I felt like I wanted to stay and continue working there.”
“ I would recommend it because it gave experience that is rare to find anywhere else and was fun all at the same time.”
“… at the beginning I didn’t know what I wanted to be, but after all the experiences I found what I liked and what I didn’t. It gave me a chance to find myself.”
