About Meharry Cancer SURP

The overall goals of the program are to expose students to different types of cancer research (basic, translational, clinical, community-based, and bioinformatics-based) and increase their awareness of cancer health disparities. Program participants will work under the mentorship of a Meharry Medical College and/or Vanderbilt University Medical Center faculty on a research project that explores the causes, diagnosis, prevention and/or treatment of cancer.

Program Benefits

  • Obtain hands-on training in basic, translational, clinical, community-based, and bioinformatics-based cancer research
  • Participate in cancer biology mini-course and weekly cancer research seminar series
  • Learn about cancer-related job opportunities via career development seminars
  • Improve written and oral presentation/communication skills
  • Interact closely with faculty and students at Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt University Medical Center
  • Present research at local cancer symposium
  • Receive stipend for summer period (undergraduates – $6,000 for 10-week research period; medical students – $5,400 for 9-week research period)
  • Housing allowance of $1,000 per participant
  • Paid travel to/from Nashville, Tenn.

Program Eligibility

All participants must be US citizens or permanent residents 

All applicants should be interested in pursuing a career in biomedical research (MD, PhD, or MD/PhD). 

Undergraduate participants must be a rising sophomore, junior or senior in a degree granting program at a college/university in the USA and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. 

Medical student applicants must be rising second year students who attend a medical school in the USA and be in good academic standing at their institution.
