JHCPU
The Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved (JHCPU) is a peer-reviewed journal focusing on contemporary health and health care issues of underserved communities in North and Central America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa (the African Diaspora), as well as internally dispossessed Indigenous people worldwide. As the owner of JHCPU, Meharry Medical College enhances its position in the field of public health with an emphasis on the underserved. We publish work in a wide range, including:
- Social determinants of health
- Health inequities
- Health policy
- Clinical care
- Chronic disease
- Homeless health care
JHCPU is the top venue for work concerning the health and health care of the underserved. Regular features include research papers and reports, literature reviews, policy analyses, and reports on noteworthy health care programs, as well as regular columns written by members of the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) and the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved (ACU).
JHCPU appears quarterly, as it has for the past 36 years (since its founding by Meharry’s then-president, Dr. David Satcher). We also produce supplemental issues (up to two in a year) and books [Natural Disasters and Public Health (2009), Free Clinics (2013), Obesity Interventions (2013)], all published by Johns Hopkins University Press.
