Measles Cases on the Rise: What Families Should Know
As measles cases continue to rise across the country, Meharry Medical College’s Dr. Dontal Johnson spoke with FOX 17 News about the highly contagious disease, the importance of vaccination and what families should know to protect themselves and their loved ones.
Measles spreads easily through the air and can lead to serious health complications, particularly for young children and those with weakened immune systems.
What Families Should Know:
Know the three C’s: Cough, coryza (runny nose) and conjunctivitis (red, watery eyes) are common early symptoms of measles. Fever and a rash are also important warning signs.
Vaccination is key: The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is one of the most effective ways to prevent measles.
Measles is highly contagious: The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.
Take symptoms seriously: If you suspect measles, contact your healthcare provider before visiting a clinic or emergency department to help prevent further exposure.
