Oncofertility Expert, Leslie C. Appiah, M.D., to Lead Meharry Medical College’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

 

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (September 10) — Meharry Medical College today announced the appointment of Leslie C. Appiah, M.D., as Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the School of Medicine and Executive Director of the Center for Women’s Health Research. Dr. Appiah joins Meharry from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Colorado.

 

A fellowship-trained pediatric and adolescent gynecologist, Dr. Appiah is a nationally recognized expert in fertility and reproductive preservation in women and girls undergoing cancer treatment, hormone replacement therapy and breast cancer treatment. She has written more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, delivered over 100 invited lectures, and served as Associate Editor for Contraception and Reproductive Medicine.

 

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to join Meharry Medical College and lead the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Center for Women’s Health Research,” said Dr. Appiah. “Meharry’s commitment to health equity and community-centered care aligns with my own mission to improve women’s health outcomes and to mentor the next generation of physicians and scientists.”

 

Her leadership extends nationally through active roles in the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the Oncofertility Consortium, and as a fellow of both the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program and the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society. Her dedication to advancing women’s health has been recognized with numerous honors, including the AMA Women Physicians Inspiration Award and recognition as a Castle Connolly Exceptional Woman in Medicine.

 

Dr. Sonja Harris-Haywood, Dean of the School of Medicine, welcomed Dr. Appiah to Meharry, “We are thrilled to have Dr. Appiah join our leadership team. Her expertise in reproductive health and fertility preservation, combined with her passion for research, mentorship, and advancing women’s health, will strengthen our School of Medicine and broaden our impact across the communities we serve. At her heart, she’s passionate about women’s health and we are fortunate to have her.”

 

Dr. Appiah’s appointment represents a significant step forward in Meharry’s mission to expand patients’ health research, education, and clinical care, particularly for underserved and historically marginalized communities. Her leadership will help ensure that patients across Tennessee and beyond have greater access to high-quality, equitable healthcare.

 

In addition to her professional achievements, Dr. Appiah enjoys traveling, attending the performing arts, and cheering on her two children alongside her husband.
