Laser safety
The safe use of lasers is paramount across Meharry Medical College, particularly in research, clinical and teaching environments. The EHS Department, led by the laser safety officer (LSO), manages a comprehensive program in accordance with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z136.1 standard to prevent accidental exposure and ensure compliance.
Our program requires the registration of all Class 3B and Class 4 laser systems and mandates the implementation of specific engineering and administrative controls, such as protective housings, interlocks, warning signs and laser safety eyewear. All personnel who operate or work within the nominal hazard zone (NHZ) of these high-power lasers must complete mandatory training, understand their specific standard operating procedures (SOPs), and strictly follow all control measures to protect themselves and their colleagues from potential beam and non-beam hazards.
