Laboratory Safety
Where work is conducted in laboratory settings at Meharry, compliance extends to the OSHA Lab Standard (29 CFR 1910.1450). This standard governs all laboratory activities and is implemented through our site-specific chemical hygiene plan (CHP), which outlines necessary safety procedures, controls and equipment to protect laboratory workers. In accordance with Meharry policy, laboratories must be periodically inspected by the EHS Department to ensure compliance. Laboratory audit results will be represented by a score that reflects the percentage of met compliance expectations. The goal is 100%. Anything less than 100% will indicate identified areas of improvement.
Contact the EHS Department below to request an audit and an updated laboratory compliance score, or any otherlaboratory specific safety needs.

Chemical waste management
A critical component of our laboratory safety program is the proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste. The EHS Department manages all chemical waste collection and disposal in accordance with federal and state guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT). This strict compliance ensures that waste is correctly identified, safely stored, and transported using approved methods, thereby protecting both our personnel and the surrounding environment from potential contamination.
All employees must follow established procedures for labeling, segregation and requesting pickup of chemical waste to uphold these vital environmental regulations. If you generate waste because of work operations, the waste must be properly labeled for storage, pickup and removal.
