Injury and illness prevention program

The Meharry Medical College Injury and Illness Prevention Program (I2P2) is our institutional, proactive commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, thereby minimizing risks, controlling exposures and ensuring compliance with occupational health regulations.

This program is fundamentally built on the principle that injury and illness are preventable. It requires the active participation of all personnel, from management to individual employees, and focuses on a continuous cycle of hazard identification, correction, and training. Key elements of the I2P2 include:

  • Hazard assessment. Routine workplace inspections and audits are conducted to identify and evaluate potential safety and health hazards across all college and clinical facilities.
  • Correction and control. Once hazards are identified, prompt and effective methods are implemented, utilizing the hierarchy of controls (engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment) to eliminate or minimize risk.
  • Employee training. All employees receive comprehensive instruction on general safety practices, job-specific hazards, and proper use of safety equipment and PPE.
  • Accident investigation. Any incident or potential incident is thoroughly investigated to determine root causes and implement corrective actions that prevent recurrence.

By integrating the I2P2 into our daily operations, we foster a strong culture of safety that protects our workforce and supports the overall mission of Meharry.
