Satisfactory Academic Progress

Federal regulations require Meharry Medical College to establish, publish, and apply standards to monitor financial aid recipients’ progress toward completing their degree program. The federal regulations require that an institution uses three measurements to determine SAP: qualitative, quantitative, and maximum time frame.

SAP Appeal Process

Students have the right to appeal against the denial of financial aid for certain offenses. The Financial Aid SAP Appeals Committee will review all appeals. Students who are not eligible for financial aid due to not meeting SAP can submit an SAP appeal to potentially regain financial aid eligibility.

To begin the appeal process, students must prepare a detailed personal statement:

  1. explaining the extenuating circumstance(s) that resulted in the credit hours, GPA and/or maximum timeframe deficiency,
  2. explains the changes to your situation that will allow you to demonstrate Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) from now on,
  3. provide an academic plan, and
  4. provide supporting documentation to prove your extenuating circumstances.

Please note that providing documentation
does not guarantee approval of your appeal or reinstatement of financial aid. The appeal process is a request for an exception to the SAP policy. Not all circumstances will be considered an exception to the policy. You will be notified by e-mail of the committee’s decision. All decisions are final.

While a student is in the appeal phase, the student will remain ineligible for financial aid.

Students who are not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards may choose to pay their student account balance out of pocket or secure private loans in order to continue enrollment and work toward regaining SAP eligibility through academic improvement.

If students are eligible for the SAP Appeal, students will receive an action item their Workday portal with instructions on how to complete. The deadline to complete the appeal process for the fall and spring semesters will be before the start of the academic semester. The deadline for the SAP committees to review submitted SAP appeals will be up to 1 month after the submission date. No exceptions.
