Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Forty-eight months of basic science education in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is provided by instructors through the completion of structured didactic courses, seminars/conferences, or problem-solving, clinically oriented laboratories.

Clinical training and education requires a demonstration of competency in the coursework for:

  • Physical diagnosis
  • Clinical medicine and pathophysiology
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery didactic lectures
  • Seminars. and conferences
  • Off-service assignments to Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, General Surgery to include sub-specialty surgery, and thirty months on clinical Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

This permits the residents to practice the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery on an outpatient, ambulatory, inpatient basis, and to teach, advance the profession, and engage in other forms of intellectual pursuits.

Goal and Objectives of the Program

The effectiveness of any institution of higher learning must ultimately be measured on the basis of resident performance. Residents in the Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery must complete the prescribed curriculum at the level of competency to receive the Certificate of Program Completion which is awarded by the College. The program requires 48 months of full-time study.

Goals

Consistent with the mission of the College, the School and the Hospital, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program exists to provide excellent education and training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The educational endeavor is achieved through completion of the structured didactic courses, seminars, conferences, and rotations through other services. This will permit residents to attain the knowledge, skills and values required to practice the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, to teach, to advance the profession and to engage in other forms of intellectual pursuit.

Objectives

The Educational Program, in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is designed to:

  1. Annually provide quality Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery care to underserved, as well as others in the communities who have been denied these services for socio-economic reasons.
  2. Serve as a regional and national resource for training a diverse population of residents as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
  3. Prepare residents to function effectively as an integral member and leader of the health care team while performing quality oral and maxillofacial care.
  4. Develop a sense of scientific inquiry, and promote intellectual pursuit in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with special attention to diseases and conditions that disproportionately affect diverse populations.
  5. Develop the skills of residents through planned didactic courses, clinical inpatient and outpatient training, while providing quality Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery care.
  6. Prepare the residents to be clinically and didactically competent in order to successfully challenge the board certification process for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS).
  7. Develop within resident’s moral and ethical standards that are an integral part of a clinician’s responsibility to the patient and society.

  • 4 months- Internal Medicine
  • 3 months- Anesthesia
  • 3 months- Meharry Oral Surgery

PGY 2:

  • 1 month- Anesthesia
  • 1 month- Emergency Medicine
  • 2 months- Meharry Oral Surgery
  • 2 months- Pediatric Anesthesia
  • 6 months- VA Oral Surgery

PGY 3:

  • 1 month- Meharry Oral Surgery
  • 1 month- Neurosurgery
  • 3 months- Nashville VA
  • 3 months- Mission Hospital Oral Surgery
  • 4 months- General Surgery

PGY 4:

  • 5 months- UT Knoxville Oral Surgery
  • 7 months- Meharry Oral Surgery

 

**This is a general rotation schedule, which may vary depending on availability of the rotation site and the number of the residents in each year of training. This ensures that each resident at the end of his/her training will rotate through all ACGME mandated rotations for the recommended period of time.
