
Meharry School of Applied Computational Sciences has been selected to host a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence from Tanzania to collaborate with Meharry faculty on research and to teach classes in data science during the 2024-2025 academic year. Ing. Judith Leo, Ph.D., an expert in applying artificial intelligence (AI), data science, data-driven solutions, mobile app, embedded systems, mathematics, and Internet of Things (IoTs) to solve challenges in the society and industry, was selected for the Fulbright award by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

“As a Fulbright Scholar in Residence, Dr. Leo adds a global perspective to our programs,” says Dean Fortune S. Mhlanga, Ph.D., School of Applied Computational Sciences. “She will also receive important experience as a researcher and educator that she will bring back to Tanzania.”
Dr. Leo, a Tanzanian female data scientist, is a senior lecture and chair for cybersecurity and privacy at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology. She is also a certified CCNA with experience in the installation of optical fiber, bandwidth and energy optimization, and advanced network configuration. She has experience working with multidisciplinary research that integrates diverse areas in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), health care, gender and digital access, policies, leadership in STEMI, environment, social and business areas. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar-in-Residence Program brings visiting scholars from abroad to U.S. colleges and universities, helping the institutions internationalize their curricula, campuses and surrounding communities, and diversify the educational experiences of their students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders. Dr. Leo is one of forty-three Fulbright Scholars-in-Residence, and among 1,000 outstanding foreign faculty and professionals who will teach and pursue research in the United States for the 2024-2025 academic year through the worldwide Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program.
As a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Leo will teach two classes per semester and collaborate with faculty on the SACS curriculum committee. Through involvement with the SACS-Oracle strategic agreement, she will gain valuable exposure to academic and industry partnerships.
