The School of Global Health at Meharry Medical College is proud to announce that Amera Khan, DrPH, has joined as an Associate Professor of Global Health for the Department of Population Health, bringing over 20 years of global and domestic public health experience to our community.
Dr. Khan has served in leadership roles across global health, in leading, designing, managing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating small- and large-scale public health projects. She brings proven expertise in applied epidemiology and surveillance; operational and implementation research using both quantitative and qualitative methods; health systems strengthening; workforce capacity building and training curriculum development; program implementation; community engagement and gender-responsive interventions; behavioral change communications; person-centered design and usability testing; digital health technologies and innovations; and advocacy, partnerships, and policy.
She previously served as a Technical Expert with the United Nations Stop TB Partnership, where she led efforts to design, assess, and expand innovative programs to detect and treat people with tuberculosis (TB), the leading infectious disease killer worldwide. Prior to her UN role, Dr. Khan was a Team Lead at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of TB Elimination, where she advanced workforce capacity development and behavioral research related to TB and TB/HIV. In this role, she designed training programs, conducted research on scaling up TB preventive treatment, particularly among migrant communities, and contributed to health communications, infection prevention and control, and outbreak response initiatives.
Her research interests include implementation science, health systems strengthening, integrated service delivery, and the use of new technologies to expand access to and improve the quality of public health services. Throughout her career, Dr. Khan has been dedicated to translating research into practical, scalable solutions for vulnerable and underserved populations.
Dr. Khan earned her Doctor of Public Health degree from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine; a Master of Public Health degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; completed graduate public health coursework at the University of Illinois at Chicago; and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
