Research
Education and research are essential in the development and dissemination of new knowledge as an integral component of the purpose/mission, goals and objectives of the dental school.

About School of Dentistry Research
Research is a component of the purpose, mission, goals and objectives of MMC and the MMCSOD. Contributions to new knowledge are made through the process of scientific inquiry. The interdisciplinary nature of research in oral health, disease processes, and treatment is essential to translate these advances into improved dental care and oral health, especially as they relate to the health of underserved populations and the elimination of oral health disparities. The MMCSOD research vision statement supports the College’s and the School’s commitment, inclusion and promotion of research as an integral component among its faculty, students and the educational program.

The Ewell Neil Dental Society
The Ewell Neil Dental Society was organized in 1918. It was named for Dr. Ewell P. Neil, who was Professor of Prosthetic Dentistry at the time. The purpose of the organization is to: (1) cultivate and promote a bond of fellowship among students of the School of Dentistry and foster a keen integration of the various departments; (2) inculcate in its members the scientific and ethical principles of the profession; (3) stimulate research among its members; (4) influence the laity in improving and maintaining conditions which are conducive to better health within the sphere of dentistry. From the time of its inception to the present day, the Ewell Neil Dental Society has played an important part in both the extracurricular and academic life of Meharry dental students. Above all, it is the hope of the society that students will contribute time to society and become highly trained and cooperative alumni with pride in their accomplishments.
