Meharry Medical College Welcomes Ashley L. Mutchler, Ph.D., as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences

Meharry Medical College has appointed Dr. Ashley L. Mutchler as an assistant professor in the School of Graduate Studies, Department of Biomedical Sciences, effective Jan. 6, 2025.

Dr. Mutchler’s research focuses on immune mechanisms in salt-sensitive hypertension and the role of inflammasomes in cardiovascular disease. Her work has been published in multiple high-impact journals, and she has presented her research at international conferences. She has received several professional honors, including the Research Recognition Award from the American Heart Association and the Poster Presentation Award from the American Physiological Society. She is also a member of the Association for Women in Science.

Prior to joining Meharry, Dr. Mutchler served as a faculty research instructor in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her academic work includes course design and instruction, as well as leading student mentoring initiatives that resulted in a 100% graduate and medical program matriculation rate and multiple student co-authored publications.

“I am honored to join the Department of Biomedical Sciences as an assistant professor,” Dr. Mutchler said. “Meharry Medical College’s supportive culture and sense of community stood out to me from the beginning, and I look forward to contributing to student learning and collaborative research.”

Dr. Mutchler holds a Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center under the mentorship of Dr. Annet Kirabo. Her research expertise includes immunology and cardiovascular and renal disease pharmacology and therapeutics.

Dr. Pamela Martin, chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, said Dr. Mutchler’s appointment will strengthen student engagement and academic innovation within the department.

“Her expertise and commitment to teaching and research will have a significant impact on both in-person and remote learning environments,” Martin said.
