At Meharry Medical College School of Medicine, the Class of 2027 established the Drs. Turner and Atta Scholarship for Collaborative Excellence to honor a first-year medical student who exemplifies outstanding academic achievement and a deep commitment to collaboration.

The scholarship reflects the institution’s enduring values, scholarship, service, and teamwork, and recognizes students who elevate both their peers and the broader learning environment.

This year, the Class of 2028 proudly continued the tradition by raising funds to recognize first-year medical student Saul Garcia. Garcia is widely regarded by faculty and peers as a student who embodies the highest standards of academic excellence while fostering a spirit of collaboration.

His commitment extends beyond the classroom, where he has demonstrated a strong dedication to philanthropy and community leadership, hallmarks of Meharry’s mission to serve and uplift communities. Garcia plays a meaningful role in strengthening the culture of teamwork within the College. His ability to support and collaborate with fellow students reflects the very essence of the scholarship’s purpose: advancing excellence through unity.

“It truly meant a lot to me to receive this award,” said Garcia. “My experience in medical school has required me to dig deep at times, and it is very fulfilling to be recognized for that hard work. I deeply appreciate Dr. Turner and Dr. Atta not only for this award, but also for all their dedication and guidance to me and my peers over this past year.”

Originally from Venezuela, Garcia grew up in northeast Tennessee and later spent several years in Colorado, places he proudly considers home. As each class continues to invest in and uplift the next generation of physicians, the Drs. Turner and Atta Scholarship for Collaborative Excellence stands as a testament to the power of student leadership, mentorship, and shared success.
