Meharry Leaders Highlight Importance of STEAM Education on Urban Outlook

STEM jobs (science, technology, engineering, math and medicine positions) power the economy. They account for two-thirds of all American jobs and over $10 to $20 trillion in sales. But the talent pipeline doesn’t match the make-up of our communities, particularly when it comes to women. More specifically Black women.

 

On a recent segment of Urban Outlook spotlighted Meharry Medical College’s commitment to expanding opportunities in science and health careers through its Black Girls in STEAM Summit.

 

During the program, host April Eaton welcomed Majornette Jefferson, Meharry’s Executive Director of Community Engagement and director of the summit, along with Catrice Grisby, a microbiology student at Middle Tennessee State University and participant in the program.

 

Together, they discussed the importance of STEAM education and the impact of Meharry’s summit in creating pathways for young women interested in science and health professions.
