Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Frank Spencer Royal Sr.

One of Meharry’s most esteemed icons, Frank Spencer Royal Sr., M.D. ’68—Chairman Emeritus of Meharry’s Board of Trustees spanning 30 years—passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026.

During his time as Meharry’s Board Chair which ended in 2016, Dr. Royal led a transformative $127.5 million campaign to strengthen infrastructure and academic programs. He also served as Chairman of the Board and later president of the National Medical Association. A native Virginian, he was also proud to serve as Chairman of the Board of his undergraduate alma mater, Virginia Union University, for 30 years, conveying leadership for the institution’s expansion and advancement.

Dr. Royal’s career in health care covered decades of dedication to both medicine and leadership. He played a pivotal role in spearheading the relocation of Richmond Community Hospital. His civic engagement was broad and impactful, particularly within the Richmond community.

Dr. Royal also made significant contributions in the corporate sector, serving as director for several prominent companies including Best Products, Chesapeake Corporation, Smithfield Foods, Dominion Energy, HCA Healthcare, SunTrust Banks and CSX Corporation.

A life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Dr. Royal remained steadfast in living out the fraternity’s principles. He was also a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (Alpha Beta Boulé), the National Association of Guardsmen, Inc. and the Commonwealth Club.

Dr. Royal and his wife, Pamela, were part of many meaningful philanthropic efforts, including the establishment of the Pamela and Frank S. Royal, Sr. Endowed Scholarship and the Royal Society at Meharry Medical College.

Dr. Royal is survived by his wife, Pamela Charlton Royal; children, Pamela Jenkins (C.N.), Karen Love, M.D. ’92 (Rodrick Love, M.D. ’92), and Frank S. Royal Jr., M.D. ’97; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
