Ashutosh Singhal, Ph.D., chief data office and associate vice president of Enterprise Data and Analytics

Enterprise Data and Analytics has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) AIM AHEAD program to tackle this challenge by developing a comprehensive framework for ensuring the responsible and effective use of AI in healthcare.

Led by Ashutosh Singhal, Ph.D., chief data officer and associate vice president of Enterprise Data and Analytics at Meharry Medical College, this project will explore ways to strengthen AI governance and ensure AI technologies provide consistent benefits across various healthcare settings across all patient groups.

“As AI continues to shape the future of medicine, it is essential to ensure that these tools function effectively, produce reliable results and align with real-world clinical needs,” says Dr. Singhal. “This initiative will help improve the design, evaluation and oversight of AI-driven healthcare solutions.”

Meharry’s unique patient population and expertise in AI and data governance, position the institution to address key challenges associated with in AI / ML applications in healthcare.

Dr. Singhal and his team’s approach includes two aims.

He and his team will begin with evaluating Meharry’s existing AI data governance practices to identify strengths, gaps and opportunities for improvement. Then, he will use that assessment to develop a robust data AI governance framework that enhances transparency, accountability, and effectiveness in AI-driven clinical decision-making.

“This initiative has the potential to transform AI-driven healthcare delivery, enhance predictive analytics, and ensure responsible implementation of AI in healthcare settings,” says Dr. Singhal.

Dr. Singhal will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts, including leaders in data analytics, medicine, patient engagement, and patient advocacy, all dedicated to promoting trustworthy and effective AI-driven healthcare solutions.

Fortune Mhlanga, Ph.D., senior vice president of Enterprise Data and Analytics and dean, School of Applied Computational Sciences, will serve as MPI and co-lead administrative activities.
