The Office of Risk Management

The Office of Risk Management is committed to fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement across all programs, clinical enterprises and collegewide. Our goal is to minimize risk to students, faculty, patients, and the broader community while supporting the educational mission of the college. 

Our Mission

To identify, assess, and mitigate potential risks in academic, clinical, and research settings through proactive strategies, training, and policy development. 

What We Do

Clinical and Academic Safety

We ensure that all students and faculty operate in safe environments—whether in the classroom, lab, or clinical site. This includes:

  • Ensuring compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and institutional health and safety regulations 
  • Monitoring and improving infection prevention and control protocols 
  • Supporting incident reporting and resolution processes 

Insurance and Liability Coverage

We manage professional liability coverage for students, staff and faculty engaged in clinical training and other activities including:

  • Malpractice insurance information 
  • Certificate of coverage issuance 
  • Claims guidance and reporting 
  • Proof of various lines of coverage 
  • Foreign travel coverage 
  • Community outreach events 

Incident Reporting & Investigation

We oversee the documentation, reporting, and follow-up for:

  • Patient safety events during clinical training 
  • Accidents or injuries involving students, faculty, staff, patients and visitors 
  • Any other adverse events affecting the college community 

Training & Resources

We provide ongoing education and tools to help our students, staff, and faculty recognize and manage risks. Topics include but not limited to:

  • Clinical risk awareness 
  • Patient privacy and data security 
  • Workplace safety and emergency response 
  • Fleet auto safety training 
  • Incident reporting and documentation

Request a certificate of insurance

What is a Certificate of Insurance (COI)? 

A Certificate of Insurance is a document issued by an insurance company that verifies the existence of insurance coverage. It includes details such as: 

  • Type of coverage 
  • Entities covered 
  • Policy limits 
  • Effective dates 
  • Named insured 
  • Additional insured (if applicable) 

Why a COI is Required 

  • Risk Mitigation: Protects the college from liability due to injury, property damage, or negligence by external vendors, contractors, or performers. 
  • Compliance: Aligns with college policies and possible legal requirements of contracts. 
  • Financial Protection: Ensures that vendors can cover costs related to claims or damages. 
  • Contractual obligations: Fulfills the requirements of contracts and agreements between the college and external entities. 
  • Third-Party Accountability: Ensures external partners maintain appropriate coverage for their operations. 

 

Process for Requesting a COI 

  • Review request form cover sheet to determine which request form to use- 
  • Determine if third-party services, high-risk activities, or off-campus venues are involved. Include all coverage requirements on the form. Be mindful of the event date and the 1-week turnaround time from the insurance carrier. 
  • Complete appropriate form with all applicable information. 
  • Submit completed form  
  • Send the form with the COI request in the title with department and event name listed in subject to risk manager. 
  • Receive the COI back from the carrier 
  • Maintain COI on File 
  • Keep digital or hard copies for audit and record-keeping on file for 1 year. 
  • Provide a copy of the certificate
