About HCOP

The Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) at Meharry Medical College is committed to supporting and empowering students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds as they explore and prepare for meaningful careers in the health professions.

Although participation in these programs does not guarantee admission to Meharry Medical College or any other health professions school, our programs are designed to help participants build strong academic foundations, gain exposure to health careers, and develop the skills needed for long-term success in higher education and the health care workforce.

Pre-Matriculation Academy: Offers high school students mentoring, ACT/SAT preparation, college readiness workshops, and project‑based community engagement experiences to strengthen confidence, leadership, and academic preparation for college.

Adult, Non‑Traditional & Veteran Student Program: Provides adult learners and veterans with the opportunity to earn a Patient Service Representative (PSR) certificate, gain practical experience in health care administration, and prepare to enter the health care workforce.

National Ambassadors Program: Equips undergraduate students with academic enrichment, research experience, test preparation, and professional mentorship to guide them toward success in applying to medical, dental, or graduate programs.

Background and history

HCOP was established under the leadership of Dr. Otis Maxwell, a professor at Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, in response to longstanding inequities in access to health professions education.

Supported through grants from the Health Resources and Services Administration, the program reflects Meharry’s historic mission to serve underserved communities and advance health equity through education and workforce development.
