Research Labs and Funded Projects
Meharry SACS’s research labs and funded projecs serve as expertise areas that reflect faculty interest and strengths. Labs are tied to the classroom, supporting a practical approach to learning, via individual and group projects, that is important to the School’s curriculum.
Our research labs are intentionally multidisciplinary to align with other wet experimental labs or research interests across Meharry’s schools.
Funded Projects

Capacity Building for Trustworthy AI in Medical Systems (TAIMS)
The TAIMS research project, funded by an NSF Expanding AI Innovation through Capacity Building and Partnerships grant, is a stepping stone towards building an artificial intelligence institute at Meharry Medical College devoted to foundational and use-inspired advances in Trustworthy AI in Medical Systems.

Maternal Health Informatics and Disparities (HRSA Grant UR650342)
This project will develop a comprehensive data analytics infrastructure model to support maternal health care for women from low-income populations with substance use disorders. It is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under cooperative agreement UR650342.
Research Labs

Advanced Computing and Analytics Laboratory
The Advanced Computing and Analytics Lab (ACAL) is an open access, gathering and collaborative workspace for student success. In this lab, our students work with faculty, researchers, industry experts and other technology thought leaders.

Clinical Trials and Outcomes Innovation Lab
The Clinical Trials and Outcomes Innovation Lab integrates cutting-edge data science methodologies with clinical research to advance health care outcomes. Our mission is twofold: to conduct rigorous clinical trials aimed at improving patient care and to leverage data-driven approaches to address complex health care challenges.

Cyber-AI for Sustainable Planetary Ecosystem Resilience (CASPER)
The Cyber-AI for Sustainable Planetary Ecosystem Resilience (CASPER) initiative is a forward-thinking program designed to address ecological risks and sustainability challenges through advanced AI, cyberinfrastructure, and extended reality (XR) technologies.

Data-driven Intelligence and Security for Cyber-physical Systems (DISCS) Lab
The Cyber-AI for Sustainable Planetary Ecosystem Resilience (CASPER) initiative is a forward-thinking program designed to address ecological risks and sustainability challenges through advanced AI, cyberinfrastructure, and extended reality (XR) technologies.

Genomics Lab
The focus of the genomics lab is to develop novel next-generation sequencing methods to identify genomic aberrations that cause disease or drug resistance and use our expertise to serve Meharry and the broader scientific community.

Intelligent Cognitive Profiling (ICP) Lab
The Intelligent Cognitive Profiling (ICP) Lab is dedicated to advancing psychological and neurological diagnosis through the integration of language analysis, medical data, and neuroimaging.

Cybersecurity Research Center
The SACS Cybersecurity Research Center at Meharry Medical College’s School of Applied Computational Sciences (SACS) advances healthcare solutions through cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, twin technologies, immersive experiences, UAV-assisted healthcare and quantum computing.

X-Trust CPS Lab: Next-Gen Secure Distributed Systems
The goal for the X-Trust CPS Lab is to advance the field of cyber-physical systems (CPS) by conducting pioneering research and developing next-generation, trustworthy distributed systems. We focus on integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) technologies to enhance the reliability, security, and efficiency of CPS. By leveraging AI/ML innovations, we aim to create adaptive and intelligent systems capable of anticipating, responding to, and mitigating complex challenges.

Saha RESONANCE Lab
The vision of the RESONANCE Lab is to manage chronic diseases with digital technologies. The lab’s two major research directions are to develop easily accessible and cost-effect technologies that enable self-care management for patients and to understand social and racial disparities in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of chronic diseases

Multimodal Environments for Twin Research & Immersive eXperiences
The METRIX Lab pursues advancements at the convergence of intelligent systems, security and immersive technologies to transform education and healthcare delivery. By leveraging geospatial intelligence, AI-driven security frameworks, and digital twins, the lab develops secure, adaptive solutions to meet the evolving needs of these sectors. METRIX integrates AI-based security with geospatial intelligence to enhance UAV-assisted healthcare systems and real-time environment monitoring.

Population Health Informatics and Disparities Research Lab (PHIDL)
The PHIDRL seeks to address health disparities and predict patient health outcomes with the desire to help patient health outcome improvement. The lab pursues health informatics and machine learning pipelines leveraging multi-modality data to identify patient at risk of severe health outcomes.

Geographic Information Systems and Visualization Lab
The Geographic Information Systems and Visualization Lab applies geospatial and remote sensing data modeling to health care. Faculty explore coverage gaps in population health, climate change effects, and develop algorithms that provide insights and innovative solutions that lead to improved health outcomes, increase accessibility to health care, and healthier communities.
