Dr. Dontal Johnson: The Power of Giving Back
For Dr. Dontal Johnson, M.D., supporting Meharry students isn’t just a duty—it’s personal. “As a Meharrian, I know the struggle. I’ve seen students who can’t afford food, rent, or tuition, and it eats at you because you’ve been there,” he says.
During his time at Meharry, scholarships helped him navigate financial challenges, from balancing medical school as a parent to overcoming personal loss. One moment stands out: “When I was in post-bac, my nephew passed away, and I was broke. Dr. Moses told me, ‘Write me a letter. Let me know what you need.’ Next thing I knew, he sent me a check. That allowed me to be with my family when they needed me most.”
That generosity shaped Dr. Johnson’s outlook on giving back. “We’re blessed so we can be a blessing to others. It all starts with alumni stepping up to help the next generation.” For him, supporting students means ensuring they can focus on their studies—not survival. “By giving, we allow them to become great doctors, ready to serve the communities that need them most.”
