Career Module in Workday

All faculty are required to complete the Career Profile in Workday upon hiring/academic appointment. This section supports the institution’s ability to capture faculty activity for reporting accreditation activities (e.g. LCME, CODA, CEPH, SACSCOC).  

Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Applications

All faculty seeking appointment, promotion and tenure are required to submit their dossiers for review and approved by the Board of Trustees. Faculty Affairs will aid new and current faculty in the preparation of dossiers for faculty appointment, promotion and tenure applications, Including preparation of CV, career module entry in Workday. 

New Faculty Orientation

New Faculty are required to attend at least one New Faculty Orientation hosted in the fall or spring of the academic year of arrival. The sessions provide an overview of the institution and resources to support new faculty onboarding.  Meeting invites will be sent via Outlook.

Faculty Development Program

Faculty development activities are hosted throughout the academic year to provide professional and personal development opportunities. 

Leadership Development

Department chairs, associate deans, and other school leaders are required to enroll and attend the leadership program. The program sessions are designed to provide school leaders with essential tools to lead within the departments and school. Meeting invites will be sent via Outlook.

Advancing Women in Nashville

Female faculty are important to institutional growth. In an effort to support female faculty, Advancing Women in Nashville offers selected participants a year of professional and personal growth in learning from other female leaders (e.g. CEOs, Vice-Presidents) from across various industries.  

The deadline for applications is November 31st of each year. 

Meharry-Vanderbilt Faculty Affiliate Program

The Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance (MVA) Faculty Affiliate Program (FAP) offers a centralized place to connect Meharry Medical College (MMC), Vanderbilt University (VU), Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), and U-54/Meharry-Vanderbilt-Tennessee State Cancer Partnership (MVTCP) faculty members to the information and tools that facilitate collaborative research and engagement in leadership activities.

Appointment Promotion and Tenure Guidelines

At the time of initial appointment, faculty members shall be given a copy of the Meharry Medical College Policy on Academic Freedom, Appointments, Promotions and Tenure of Faculty by their department chairperson. Additionally, each chairperson is responsible for developing specific performance expectations and, where appropriate, special conditions relating to academic performance. These expectations and special conditions should be specified in writing, given to the faculty member, and attached as an addendum to the initial and subsequent letter(s) of appointment and/or reappointment. The resources provided to the faculty member for his/her development should be explicitly outlined in writing.  

Faculty Development Course

The Faculty Development Course is offered through the Learning Management System (LMS) provides various faculty development resources for academic career support such as training videos, faculty development curriculum, library resources, etc. Faculty can enroll themselves in the course. 

Faculty Development Plans

Assessment of the faculty member’s accomplishments and achievement in meeting agreed upon goals and objectives is an integral part of the process for career development. Each faculty member at Meharry Medical College receives an annual performance appraisal by the department chair, a review of the Faculty Development Plan should be included. The performance appraisal (i.e. via Workday) and faculty development plan are considered a significant component for promotion and tenure.  

Faculty Handbook

The Faculty Handbook provides information to current and incoming faculty regarding Meharry Medical College. It further represents a summation of specific information gleaned from the following policy documents of Meharry Medical College:  

(1) Faculty Senate By-Laws;  
(2) Personnel Manual;  
(3) Appointments, Promotion and Tenure Documents;  
(4) Policy Statements and Institutional Directives; and  
(5) Faculty Evaluation Document.  

It also provides pertinent information relative to College policies.   

Human Resources/Workday Career Module Guidelines

Meharry has adopted the Workday System for Human Resources, Faculty Information Management and Student Information Management (i.e. Workday Student). Faculty are encouraged to maintain their faculty activity (i.e. research, publications, etc.). This information is collected in the Workday Career Module.  

Faculty Awards and Recognition

Meharry Medical College is committed to honoring the dedication, excellence, and contributions of its faculty through a variety of formal recognition programs. These awards serve to highlight the exceptional work of faculty who advance Meharry’s mission of teaching, service, scholarship and compassionate care. 

The Academic Awards Committee, comprised of faculty and students, is charged with reviewing all nominations and supporting materials submitted for each award. Through a thorough and thoughtful selection process, the committee ensures that recipients embody the highest standards of excellence and professionalism that define Meharry Medical College. 

The Distinguished Exemplary Teacher Award

Sponsored by the Office of the President, the Distinguished Exemplary Teacher Award recognizes excellence in teaching across Meharry’s academic community. Award recipients demonstrate outstanding instructional effectiveness, civility, commitment to student development, collegiality, and meaningful service to both students and the institution.  

Nominations are accepted from students, faculty, and administrators. The recipient is honored at Fall Convocation (the first Monday of each academic year). 

Deadline for nominations: August 31st of each academic year.   

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation (School of Medicine)

In partnership with The Arnold P. Gold Foundation, this national award recognizes one faculty member and one graduating medical student who exemplify the humanistic values central to Meharry’s mission. Honorees demonstrate compassion, empathy, respect, and excellence in patient care and medical education. Recipients are acknowledged during the annual commencement ceremony. 

Deadline for nominations: February 1st of each academic year.
