Genetics Education and Community Engagement

The Meharry Medical College DNA Learning Center (DNALC) is a premier science education facility committed to inspiring and educating the next generation through immersive, hands-on experiences in genetics and biotechnology. As the first DNALC located at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), it is part of the global network of DNA Learning Centers led by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Services

Field Trips & Lab Experiences 

Engaging middle and high school students in practical experiments such as DNA extraction, bacterial transformation, DNA fingerprinting, and human genetic variation. 

Summer Science Camps 

Exciting, week-long explorations in biotechnology, microbiology, and genetic engineering for aspiring young scientists. 

Professional Development for Teachers 

Curriculum-aligned workshops and resources to help educators integrate genetics and biotechnology into their classrooms. 

Community Outreach Events 

Bringing genetics to the public through STEM festivals, Juneteenth science activities, family science nights, and other interactive events. 

Internships & Research Exposure 

Providing historically underrepresented students in STEM with hands-on research opportunities and mentorship in genetics.

Our Facilities and Resources

  • Fully equipped lab stations for molecular biology experiments and techniques 
  • Digital tools and interactive simulation software for enhanced interactive genetics learning 
  • A prep and intern lab space with microcentrifuges, light microscopes, incubators, and more 
  • Portable sequencing devices (e.g., Oxford Nanopore MinION) for real-world genomics experience 
  • Mobile lab kits and outreach tools for offsite educational programs

Location and Partnerships

The Meharry DNALC is located in the West Basic Sciences Building at Meharry Medical College. We collaborate with local schools, community organizations, and national initiatives, including the Together for CHANGE initiative and the Diaspora Human Genomics Institute (DHGI).
