Our mission to minimize health disparities doesn’t stop with medicine. Meharry collaborates with community partners like Vanderbilt University and State Farm Insurance in order to defend public health both in and outside the clinic.
Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance
Founded in 1999, the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance (MVA) seeks to eliminate health disparities by developing and supporting collaborative initiatives between Meharry Medical College, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, community partners and the individuals, families and communities they serve.
Meharry-State Farm Alliance
In 2002, Meharry inked a partnership with State Farm Insurance in order to reduce the large number of disparities amongst ethnic groups in seatbelt usage. Using public policy, national leadership, education and research, the Alliance was able to make strides in defense of public safety that culminated in honors from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

The Governor’s Highway Safety Office
To promote the safety of children on our roadways, we partnered with the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to establish car seat fitting analysis stations across Tennessee. As part of the Tennessee Child Passenger Safety Center, families can visit the car seat fitting stations manned by our certified child passenger safety technicians for an expert opinion on the placement of their children’s car seats.
Ford Motors
To address the gender disparity in automotive education and driver safety, we partner with Two Rivers Ford in Mt. Juliet to offer a car care and safe driving workshop to young female drivers. As part of the Ready, Safe, Drive! project, young women from ages 15 to 20 have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of car care from expert Ford technicians, test their knowledge with interactive games and win prizes.
