Medical Student Research

The School of Medicine’s Medical Student Research encourages all students to pursue research opportunities that enrich their education, strengthen their skills and help define their scientific and clinical interests.

Participating in research allows you to take your learning to the next level, applying knowledge in real-world settings, contributing to new discoveries and collaborating with teams who share your passion. Explore the research opportunities available to you below.

Short-Term Research Opportunities

Guidance for Finding a Short-Term Research Opportunity

  • Conduct an independent search to find research mentors. This can include reviewing departmental websites or faculty profiles.
  • Use online databases and tools
    • PubMed (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/) is a key resource for finding recent publications, by searching for keywords related to your interests (e.g., “HPV integration,” “medical education disparities,” or “cardiovascular genomics”).  The lead and corresponding authors represent active researchers in the field that may be willing to support student research.
    • The NIH RePORTER database (https://reporter.nih.gov/) facilitates searches for funded research grants by keyword, institution, or investigator, possibly giving insight into researchers that may have funds to support research.
  • General internet searches, academic search engines like Google Scholar, and even professional society websites can also help in identifying potential research mentors.
