The SOM Career Advisement Program

The SOM Career Advisement team is composed of dedicated faculty who serve as Specialty Career Advisors. These faculty members volunteer to be primary points of contact for current Meharry Medical College medical students, offering personalized guidance throughout the specialty selection and residency application process.

Advising sessions vary in length and timing based on the student’s year in medical school.  Although appointments are generally available 9-5pm, students should email the SOMstudentaffairs@mmc.edu to receive scheduling instructions.

Using a series of class meetings (the “Road to Residency” series), workshops, and events, this vital initiative guides students through exploring and selecting a specialty, building a curriculum vitae that is competitive for their preferred specialty, and assisting with a strategic residency application process including formulating their rank order list. Individualized 1:1 advising is also incorporated into the program at critical transition points in the preparation for the residency application process.

Your advisors and mentors are here to:

  • Help you understand how your interests, values, and strengths connect with medical specialties.
  • Provide accurate, up-to-date information about specialties and subspecialties.
  • Offer opportunities to explore different paths in medicine.
  • Support you in the career-planning process, from the classroom to residency and beyond.
