Liaison Committee on Medical Education

Meharry Medical College has been placed on probationary status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the national accrediting body for the U.S.-based medical school, to address some notable areas of concern. 

Probationary status does not impact our medical degree program’s accreditation nor our students’ degrees and futures. Our program is still accredited, and our day-to-day operations and classes will continue as normal. 

A Message from Dean Sonja Harris-Haywood M.D., M.S., MA

Dear Meharry Community, 

Following Meharry Medical College School of Medicine (MMCSOM)’s LCME survey visit on April 8-9, 2024, the LCME reaffirmed its decision to keep our medical degree program on probation. Since the visit, we have continued making significant curricular, operational, and infrastructure improvements, and our accreditation team has held regular meetings with the LCME secretariats, who have provided positive feedback on our progress. 

Throughout this process, MMCSOM has remained fully accredited, and the probation status has served as a catalyst for meaningful advancements within the School of Medicine. 

MMCSOM remains on probation with full accreditation, and our next LCME survey visit is scheduled for April 2026. 

We remain committed to excellence, continuous improvement, and transparency and will continue to keep the Meharry community informed as we move forward.
