Integrative Genomics and Epidemiology Department
The Department of Integrative Genomics and Epidemiology advances research at the intersection of genomics, epidemiology and socio-environmental science to uncover the complex drivers of cardiometabolic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary, data-driven approach, the department is committed to addressing health disparities and translating scientific discoveries into meaningful public health solutions.

Mission
The mission of the Department of Integrative Genomics and Epidemiology is to drive transformative research that uncovers the complex interplay of genomic, cellular, behavioral, social and environmental factors contributing to cardiometabolic diseases and cancer. By employing a multi-level, systems science approach, the department is committed to addressing health disparities, particularly in populations of African ancestry, and advancing equity in health outcomes.
Vision
The department’s vision is to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying multifactorial diseases, such as cardiometabolic conditions and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates genomics, epidemiology, and socio-environmental factors, we aim to revolutionize the study of these diseases. Leveraging advanced methods, including machine learning and trans-omics, we seek to address the limitations of conventional approaches by providing a holistic perspective on disease risk and progression. Our ultimate goal is to develop solutions that bridge the gap between genomic research and public health impact.
Objectives
The research program within the department focuses on three key objectives: Integrate Diverse Data, Address Health Disparities, Innovate Analytical Approaches.
Structure
The department operates under the ethos of “Many Disciplines, One Goal” bringing together a network of specialized labs and units (data science and machine-learning, population genomics, epidemiology, molecular biology, genetic counseling) that work collaboratively to address the mission and vision. Through this integrative structure, the department strives to achieve groundbreaking research outcomes that inform evidence-based interventions and promote health equity.
