Research

At Meharry SACS you will learn from faculty who are leveraging artificial intelligence, machine learning and other data science techniques to address health disparities and improve health care for all communities. At the same time, we work to ensure the algorithms behind these advanced technologies are trustworthy and transparent.

Research applying AI and Machine Learning

At Meharry SACS, our Research and Development mission is to develop and deploy impactful and socially responsible scientific knowledge and practical technologies that empower society to improve the quality of life.

You will work with faculty who apply their research in impactful areas such as:

  • computational biology,
  • cybersecurity,
  • drug repurposing,
  • predicting cancer and other health risks,
  • genomics,
  • clinical trials,
  • wearable devices,
  • geographic information systems, and
  • population health informatics.

Our research labs are tied to the classroom. That means you will you master classroom projects through a practical, project-based approach to learning.

Research Labs and Funded Research

Our research labs serve as expertise areas that reflect faculty interest and strengths. Labs are tied to the classroom, supporting a practical approach to learning, via individual and group projects, that is important to the School’s curriculum.

Publications

From quantum computing and cybersecurity to genomic medicine, SACS faculty actively advance the boundaries of computational science. Our research—published in premier journals and academic conferences—transforms complex datasets into solutions for predictive diagnostics, maternal health informatics, social determinants of health and other impactful areas.

Student Research

Our students engage in individual and group projects using real-world data. In addition to master’s program capstone projects and the doctoral dissertation, students can apply for research assistant positions where they will gain valuable experience work closely with faculty on a project.

Capstone Projects

The capstone is the culminating project for each student in the M.S. Data Science and M.S. Biomedical Data Science programs. The comprehensive, real-life industry-type projects are oriented toward the student’s domain of interest.

Collaborations

We pursue funded biomedical data science research collaborations internally throughout Meharry Medical College and with external institutions and research centers in several areas.
