Shumit Saha, Ph.D., joined Meharry Medical College as an assistant professor of biomedical data science in the School of Applied Computational Sciences in December 2023. He is committed to advancing a patient-centered research program through technologies that enhance digital health interventions.

Dr. Saha’s research focuses on developing artificial intelligence (AI)-embedded mobile and digital technologies, such as wearables, smartphones, and applications, to improve the management of chronic diseases. To address conditions such as heart failure, sleep apnea, diabetes, and asthma, he has developed several algorithms utilizing advanced signal processing and AI techniques. Dr. Saha has extensive expertise in analyzing various data sets, including speech, snoring, breathing sounds, accelerometer data, nasal airflow, oxygen saturation, ECG and EEG. He also conducts big data analysis of large-scale surveys and electronic health records (EHR) to support or evaluate policies.

Prior to his appointment at Meharry, Dr. Saha served as an assistant scientist at the University Health Network, Canada, and held a cross-appointment as an assistant professor at the Institute of Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

Since joining Meharry, he has successfully secured more than $200,000 in funding as a principal or co-principal investigator. To date, he holds one patent, has published more than 17 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious journals, and has presented at 32 conferences. Additionally, Dr. Saha has mentored and trained more than 10 students and professionals in the fields of data science and biomedical engineering and serves as an editorial board member for Scientific Reports—Nature Publishing Group.
