Meharry Medical College immigration attorney Terry Olsen, recently took part in meetings with Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan, resulting in an agreement of cooperation between the two medical schools.
Professor Po-Liang Lu, dean of KMU College of Medicine and Dr. Sonja Harris-Haywood, Meharry School of Medicine dean, signed a memorandum of understanding for academic cooperation and exchange, as well as an agreement for exchange of students to start the partnership.
Meharry’s founding purpose aligns with one of KMU’s missions—to provide medical and educational services to underserved communities.
The MOU and student exchange agreement opens the door for KMU and MMC to develop a partnership in health care research and education based on mutual interests and benefits, including teaching cooperation, research exchanges, talent cultivation and other possibilities. In addition, both KMU and MMC can also promote mutual exchanges among teachers, students and researchers to understand the similarities and differences in each other’s medical care and policies, establishing a better health care system for the people.
Olsen and his wife Miao-Ju Olsen—a Pingtung, Taiwan native—were instrumental in the KMU/MMC agreement during their December 2023 visit to Taiwan and Kaohsiung Medical University.
