Laser and Radiation Safety

Laboratory lasers can pose serious hazards if not handled properly, including eye injuries, skin burns, and equipment damage. Our Laser Safety Program establishes protocols for safe laser use, including proper training, signage, personal protective equipment, and controlled access to laser areas. All lasers Class 3B and Class 4 must be registered with the campus Laser Safety Program.

All users must understand the classification of the laser they are working with and follow operational procedures specific to that class. Routine inspections, maintenance, and adherence to safety guidelines help prevent accidents and ensure a secure lab environment. By fostering awareness and compliance, we aim to protect everyone working with or near laser systems.

Authorized Use

Only personnel who have completed required laser safety training and have been granted authorization may operate lasers. Authorized users are responsible for following all safety procedures, wearing appropriate protective equipment, and ensuring that warning signs and access controls are in place. This policy helps prevent unauthorized or unsafe laser use in the laboratory.

Laser Classification

Lasers are categorized by their potential hazard, from Class 1 (safe under normal use) to Class 4 (highly hazardous). Each class has specific safety requirements, including protective eyewear, controlled access, and operational limits. Understanding the classification of your laser is critical for selecting appropriate safety measures and complying with regulatory standards.

Laser Registration

All lasers Class 3B and Class 4 must be registered with the campus Laser Safety Program. Registration ensures proper oversight, confirms that operators are trained and authorized, and helps prevent accidents. Even lower-class lasers should follow safe practices, but registration is only required for these higher-risk classes.

Radiation Safety

Radiation safety is essential for protecting lab personnel, the public, and the environment from exposure. Our Radiation Safety Policy outlines the rules, procedures, and best practices for working safely with radioactive materials and radiation-producing devices. All users are expected to follow these guidelines to minimize risk and maintain a safe working environment. For guidance, oversight, or questions, the Radiation Safety Committee provides support and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.
