Dr. Carlos Castillo-Salgado is a Professor of the Department of Epidemiology of the Bloomberg School of Public Health with joint appointments in the Department of Population, Family & Reproductive Health, Department of Health Policy and Management and the School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University.

Also, Dr. Castillo-Salgado has been a Visiting Professor in most of the schools of public health in Latin America and Spain. He has pioneered the development of applied and field epidemiology training programs for public health professionals in the Americas. He received a J.D. with Honorable Mention in 1972 from the Law School of the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, an M.D. (Médico Cirujano) in 1978 from the Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, an M.P.H. and Dr.PH. for the School of Hygiene and Public Health, Johns Hopkins University (1981 and 1988). He is Board Certified in Public Health (CPH) from the National Board of Public Health Examiners and Member of the NBPHE’s Charter Class (2008). Currently, Dr. Castillo-Salgado is the Director of the Global Public Health Observatory of the Bloomberg School of Public Health and Director of the Certificate Training Program in Epidemiology for Public Health Managers. During more than two decades, he served in several technical and senior leadership positions at the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization. From 2005-2010 he was the Senior Special Advisor and Director of the Forum for Public Health in the Americas. The current operational research activities of the Global Public Health Observatory are: Developing Innovative Public Health Metrics and Epidemiological Intelligence Observatories, Implementing Real-Time and Event-Based Public Health Surveillance Systems; Using Advanced Geospatial Statistics for Epidemiology and Measuring Health Inequalities at Local Levels. He has been a scientific and technical consultant for many countries and intergovernmental organizations in the areas of health information systems, measuring health inequalities, developing public health surveillance systems, geographic information systems, epidemiological risk assessment and equity-focused health impact assessment. Dr. Castillo-Salgado is the author of several scientific publications and articles of epidemiology, measuring health inequalities, global public health surveillance, geographic information systems in epidemiology, and urban health. From 1999-2006, he served as the Editor in Chief of the PAHO/WHO Epidemiological Bulletin. Currently, he is member of the Faculty Editorial Board for Math, Science and Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University Press and for eight years of the Publication Board of the American Public Health Association (APHA). In 2007 he was elected as Member of APHA’s Governing Council, representing the International Health Section. He serves on the Advisory Committee of the Institute of Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is a member of multiple professional associations in epidemiology and public health and a board member in several community organizations. In 2011, he was inducted in the category of “Faculty” in the Delta Omega Society of Public Health, Alpha Chapter. He has received many national and international honors and awards including the PAHO/WHO Director’s Award, the Medal OTHLI from the Government of Mexico, the AMTRA-2016 and 2017 Awards and the 2018 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching (Best Professor and Mentor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health/Johns Hopkins University). In 2017 he was inducted as a Numerary Academic Member in Epidemiology from the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico, and several others awards for his leadership in epidemiology and public health. In 2019, he received the “The Latino Caucus’ Distinguished Nationally Known Health Professional Award 2019” during the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting. In 2021-2022, the School of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the Mexico’s National Health Foundation (FUNASA) created the Award “Dr. Carlos Castillo-Salgado” in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to public health and global epidemiology in Mexico and, in the countries of the Americas. The objective of this award was to recognize the research work on the impact of the pandemic of COVID-19 done by young Mexican researchers.

In 2021, Dr. Castillo-Salgado was appointed by the UN-DESA and the World Health Organization as member of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on COVID-19 Mortality Assessment and Co-Chair of the Working Group on Inequality in COVID-19 mortality between and within countries.
